How does your research contribute to a better world?

"We rely on medicines in the treatment of many diseases. However, choosing an appropriate drug treatment in the individual patient can be challenging, and often needs adjustments to factors such as the patient’s age, weight or presence of other diseases or drug treatments.

My research aims to find tools and methods to facilitate an appropriate drug treatment in the individual patient. One of my focus areas is antibiotic treatment. Mathematical models help to understand the complex and dynamic interplay between the bacteria, the patient (host) and the drug. By optimizing the drug and dosing regimen to fit the specific patient, the aim is to maximize the treatment outcome and to minimize the selection of antibiotic resistance, to keep the efficacy of our antibiotics (both new and old) also in the future."
