How does your research contribute to a better world?

"Since the development of artificial fertilizers in the beginning of the 20th century, our society has greatly increased the circulation of nitrogen through the environment. The problem is that excessive releases of nitrogen can lead to eutrophication, and certain forms of nitrogen (e.g. ammonia) can have toxic effects on aquatic systems.

My research provides a technology for the removal of nitrogen from water. To be specific, the technology is a bioreactor that exploits the process of microbial denitrification for the reduction of nitrate-nitrogen to harmless nitrogen gas. The bioreactor is a low cost, low maintenance solution for removing nitrogen from smaller water flows. The technology has been developed in collaboration with the mining and quarrying industries, leading to improvements in water quality where it is applied."
