How does your research contribute to a better world?

"How are ideas about health and the practice of healthcare influenced by migration?  Migrants’ ideas about what constitutes good health and how to treat illness are affected by coming into contact with new cultures. People migrate in order to improve their lives but the process of moving cultures, crossing borders and encountering new languages can compromise getting access to appropriate health care: some migrant routes themselves constitute a threat to life. The demand for healthcare labour is one factor that facilitates international movements of working age people. How can European welfare states hire migrant labour, while debarring access for undocumented and irregular migrants? The contradiction between the principle of universal access to healthcare within a nation, and the securitizing of national borders throws up a multitude of both practical and theoretical research problems demanding our attention."
